Losing my brother at a young age was the worst and best thing that happened for me. It was painful, but taught me the value of time.
Within 12 years, I had pulled myself up from a cashier position at Jack-In-The-Box to practicing law at the most prestigious law firm in the world. I then walked away because that wasn’t my story.

Advice to live by
10 years ago I received the best career advice, and I want to share it with you.
I was accepted into a top-5 law school and was packing to move to New York.
Two days before my flight, the dean of a lower-ranked law school emailed me to offer a full-ride scholarship to his school, plus a $15,000 a semester stipend to cover my living expenses.
I ran into my mentor’s office (one of the partners in the law firm I was a paralegal at) and handed him a print-out of the email. “Mike! Look at what I just received! I don’t know what to do!”
Mike took the print-out from me, read it, and then, calmly, tore it to pieces and threw it down the trash can by the side of his desk.
“You don’t measure the value of money at a point in time. The money you’ll make, throughout the arc of your career, if you go to the higher-ranked school will dwarf the money you will save now by going to this law school.”
Mike’s advice was about money, but it applies to all kinds of investments in ourselves. What matters is not comparing an investment expense to zero; but comparing it to the opportunity cost of not making the investment at all.
If you think coaching (or therapy, or gym membership, or education) is expensive, it sure it — but if done right, that expense is dwarfed by your increased earning / happiness potential.
